Making a lovo - underground oven

from w
This is how we make a lovo in our backyard to cook pork, fish, taro, palusami. No banana leaves. Foil to wrap the food items. We use a crate so this makes it easy to lift everything out quickly once the lovo is opened up and the food is well cooked.

  2. We are making a lovo again this weekend because a group of Fijians will visit Geelong for a multicultural church gathering, so Peceli will have to visit Footscray market to buy some dalo and pork. I like lovo food because the guys do the work!

Do you get Fiji Dalo at Footscray? Is rourou available there too?

  4. Yes, there is Fiji dalo at the Footscray market and also at some of the nearby shops. Selling for $5 to %7 a kilo. Yesterday Peceli also bought some kumala but that is common in our nearby supermarkets anyway.
Don't know about rourou. I haven't seen that for years. We tried to grow dalo in our garden but it didn't grow well - we did use the leaves though.

  6. Sam, you are welcome to come down to Geelong tomorrow - the FIT students are in Melbourne and are coming down - meet first at Altona Meadows Uniting Church at 10 a.m. for church, have lunch there then get a ride down to Geelong. The Multicultural Service and lovo dinner goes until about 7.30 p.m.

  8. Bula sia,
Don't know whether you can take palusami through customs. I guess your friends in Sydney know where to buy dalo etc. We just used tinned coconut cream these days. Also you'll need permission from the local fire brigade if the lovo is in amongst other houses.

Has anyone tried lamb in an underground pit? I have a friend that has done pork and beef but wants to try lamb. Thanks.
