Best wishes to all those who celebrate the Hindu festival of Diwali in Fiji and elsewhere with hospitality, lights, prayer and fine food such as halwa. The Festival of Lights is a lovely occasion for neighbours to visit one another, share in hospitality and to beautify houses and compounds with rows of little lights.

Happy Diwali!
ReplyDeleteI miss not being in Fiji at this time - I used to love it!
I never knew this until today, but according to the Wikipedia entry about Diwali, Sikhs also celebrate it.
Thanks. It is a lovely festival.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that Sikhs also celebrate it but then I saw a photograph of lights at Amritsar. I have a lot of respect for the Fiji Punjabi community and one weekend when I stayed with a Sikh family in Navua I read one of the books on their beliefs. I was impressed by their commitment and their moderation. But again, I don't know much really. I remember the temple in Samabula when I lived in Belo Street one year.
There are Sikhs in Melbourne and they have built a temple.

A kind correspondent just send me an extra copy of "The Sikhs of Fiji". As a Sikh whose family lived in Fiji, I had been trying to get my hands on it for a while!
ReplyDeleteYou should know that the book is dated, and is not very detailed per se.
You can probably obtain a copy from the University of South Pacific bookshop in Suva or from Suva City Bookshop. Also, you can try Khalsa School in Ba. Online, I know Fijilive website was selling it at one time.
You can also get some general information at fijisikh.com The site is a work in progress at this time.
Finally, yes Sikhs to celebrate Divali -- or Bandi Chhor as we call it. It is celebrated to commemorate Guru Hargobind's return to Amritsar after being released from Moghul captivity.
Regards,
S. Singh
