from Cyclopedia of Fiji

from w.
Someone in a comment asked about the McPhee family - as one of them was in Labasa early last century. The name doesn't seem to be in the present-day Fiji Phone Book. But in the Cyclopedia of Fiji of 1907 (my copy a reprint by the Museum in 1984) I found a page with some reference to a Mr Robert Duncan McPhee on page 275. Here it is, if you can read it. Click on picture to enlarge.

Thank you so much for the information concerning Robert Duncan McPhee, this part of my family's history has always been a bit of a mystery especially since all members of my Father's family have now passed away. Much appreciated and kind regards.

  3. Hi Jared,
No Sutherlands in the 1907 book, only Sunderland. In today's Fiji phone book there are two listed. Maybe do some google searches and something might come up.

Hello. I realise this is a very old post, but I haved some information one of your commenters will be interested in. Currently transcribing my father's war diary. He was a member of the 2/1st Australian Infantry Battalion captured in Crete

A good mate of his, Lance Corporal Alexander Duncan Kaitia MacPhee (army #NX2656)born 16 May 1906 in Labasa Fiji Islands, next of kin Robert Macphee, was killed on 20 May 1941 at the very beginning of the battle for Crete.

I realise the spelling is different, but suspect that was a military typo

We have photos of Alex McPhee with my father to share if we can track down his family.
