Now I hope this is not just a rumour because it seems like Labasa is getting on the map these days with lots of possibilities for being noticed in a positive rather than a negative way!
I wonder where the Survivor crew expect to go. Vorovoro is already taken. Maybe Druadrua island, or an island near Nukubati, or they could go up into the beautiful rain forests - or - down amidst the mangroves! The mind boggles. Would they bring in crocodiles as one film crew did at Pacific Harbour to film 'Anaconda 2'?
Of course the film crew will want their nice comfy accommodation so the hotels and guest houses in Labasa had better smarten up! I love the Mayor's comments about 'beautify the small island and maximise the exposure of the ghost town'! Hey, Mr Mayor, stop being so negative about Labasa. We, at Babasiga, are trying to give a positive spin to the place!

Mayor welcomes Survivor Shooting
August 7 2006 17.23
The Labasa Town Council is hoping that the shooting of the next Survivor series in Labasa will boost economic possibilities in the north.
Town mayor Doctor Pradeep Singh said that with the Labasa economy taking a nose dive, the idea of having a world TV series shot on their island is an opportunity not to be missed.
He added that the council will beautify the small island and maximize the exposure of the ghost town.
FAVC Chairman Joe Mar has confirmed that officials of the series have already checked out the site in Labasa and are quite happy with what they have seen.
Mar refused to divulge further information on the matter as they want the series producers to make an official announcement first before they do.
The Survivor series brings a handful of men and women of all ages and all walks of life from America to live in a secluded land and they are divided into two tribes where the weakest link is voted off the island.
I hope the people in Labasa brace themselves for the invasion of Hollywood types.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see who survives what when they get into town!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Wendy!
So far the story about Survivor being filmed somewhere near Labasa is just a story. I hope it does work out. I recall a Survivor type program filmed in Fiji and the poor dills were washing dalo in salt water then peeling it. You know how itchy it gets when wet!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the birthday greetings NZM. I had lunch with a friend at Cats, a restaurant with cheap but nice food because they want to attract people to the pokies!

Hmmm. Yes I know the locality and it's looking good. Isolated and undeveloped little island so there won't be planes flying overhead or tourists paddling by.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope there will be a good outcome for the nearby community.

I'm interested in getting more information about Survivor filming there. I run the web site at survivor.com
ReplyDeleteI'm curious what the reaction of the local people are to the Survivor production crew showing up there. I live in Los Angeles and we have people film around our neighborhood from time to time and it irritates us. You might like it. I don't know. What do you think? Please email me at babasiga@survivor.com Conrad Walton
To Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteWe deleted some comments and info we gave a while back because we decided we don't want to be part of the detective work of spoilers who are stickybeaking about the Survivor 14 series. Yes, we know where it is, yes, we have seen videos of the location, know some of the local people there, etc. Relatives come from there too.
Also, that Fiji newspaper article about trouble with the lease, well, that was a beatup and it was resolved.
Okay, so we won't get into writing emails about the location. Let them just get on with it. We don't want to spoil it!

I was thrilled the first time I heard that there was going to be a film making taking place in our area.A remote place like Druadrua Island, it was fascinating and intriuging because mostly we hear that its in Hollywood where they make films. The reality turn out one day and we saw speedboats with engines of 200hps and fancy fibreglasses speeding around the Island. Many people in Druadrua benefited from this industry as it provided jobs for them for a couple of weeks. Thanks to the Survivors.
ReplyDeleteThat post about Survivor was a couple of years ago or more. Yes, it was good for that part of Macuata. You usually only hear about Druadrua in the old taralala song!
