And that's not ideal at all.

As for its medicinal values - well, okay, in moderation.

And, of course - it's not my cultural icon, so who am I to be a know-all anyway? Peceli is the expert - drinks small bilos a few times a week in social or ceremonial contexts. At least we have a ban on smoking inside our house these days and visitors respect that.
w.Peceli and Wendy's Bloghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01165668047817341837noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21733836.post-5513097272733001172007-04-10T23:20:00.000-07:002007-04-10T23:20:00.000-07:00I'm not sure I buy the statement they make about "...I'm not sure I buy the statement they make about "not addictive". It may not have chemical properties that make it so, but any behavior, especially one that changes one's cognitive and/or emotional state can become addictive.

That is not to argue against its use. Alcohol serves a similar social purpose is most parts of the world and is can be far more harmful. I don't advocate against it either (or many things which are illegal).

The references to religion are irrelevant (IMHO) in this discussion as spirituality is a personal experience and should not be used to determine public policy.

It is obvious to me that people can have problems with kava just as they do with alcohol or marijuana. That should be dealt with with compassion and counseling, not legal action.

The failure of American "prohibition" of alcohol, which only resulted in a huge growth in organized crime, and the "war on drugs" which has had similar results should provide lessons.

The fact is that humans, and even other primates, have used substances that change their mental state, whether for personal, social, or spiritual reasons.

Some individuals will have a problem with it. It is in their DNA. Rather than make a blanket rule that creates more problems than it solves, let's accept that fact and deal with it by helping those that do have such problems.

And then there is the issue of one culture imposing it's values on another, but I've gone on enough already!Pandaboniumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08352197350806179930noreply@blogger.com
